        ในยุคสมัยนี้ หากจะพูดถึงนักเขียนการ์ตูนที่บรรดานักอ่านการ์ตูนรุ่นใหม่เขารู้จัก ส่วนใหญ่มักรู้จักกับนักแต่งการ์ตูนชาวญี่ปุ่น แล้วนักเขียนการ์ตูนคนไทยล่ะ พวกเขารู้จักใครกันบ้าง แน่นอนว่าส่วนใหญ่มักจะรู้จักนักเขียนการ์ตูนที่เขียนลงใน ขายหัวเราะ มหาสนุก เท่านั้น แต่สำหรับนักอ่านการ์ตูนที่มีอายุหน่อย ก็จะรู้จักบุคคลท่านนี้ และก็ยกย่องว่า เป็นสุดยอดนักเขียนการ์ตูนไทยคนหนึ่งในวงการการ์ตูนไทยเลยทีเดียว และเป็นแรงบันดาลใจแก่นักเขียนการ์ตูนไทยยุคหลังๆอีกด้วย ด้วยสไตล์ลายเส้น การแต่งเรื่องที่มีความเป็นเอกลักษณ์เป็นของตนเอง บุคคลที่เราจะมาแนะนำก็คือ "จุก เบี้ยวสกุล"

        จุก เบี้ยวสกุล เป็นนามปากกาที่เขาตั้งขึ้นเองเพื่อใช้เป็นนามแฝงสำหรับเขียนนิยายภาพ ชื่อจริงของเขาคือ จุลศักดิ์ อมรเวช เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 8 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2484 เป็นบุตรของนางฉาย และนายจวน อมรเวช บ้านเกิดของเขาคือซอยสารภี ย่านถนนลาดหญ้า ฝั่นธนบุรี จุลศักดิ์ อมรเวช เรียนหนังสือระดับมัธยมศึกษาที่ โรงเรียนมัธยมบ้านสมเด็จเจ้าพระยา ซึ่งเป็นโรงเรียนในสังกัดวิทยาลัยครูบ้านสมเด็จเจ้าพระยา ต่อมาเขาได้สอบเข้าเรียน สายวิชาชีพช่างที่ โรงเรียนเพาะช่าง ซึ่งเวลานั้น (พ.ศ. 2500) มีสายวิชาฝึกหัดครูวิจิตรศิลป์ หัตถกรรม และศิลปะประยุกต์ เขาเรียนในแผนกศิลปะประยุกต์ และหยุดเรียนไปเมื่ออยู่ปีที่ 2

        ก่อนที่ จุลศักดิ์ อมรเวช จะเข้ามาเรียนเพาะช่าง เขาเริ่มเขียนการ์ตูนให้ สำนักพิมพ์บางกอก ซึ่งเป็นสำนักพิมพ์ที่ผลิตหนังสือมีชื่อเสียงย่านถนนหลานหลวง งานเขียนการ์ตูนชิ้นแรกคือนิยายภาพเรื่อง “จอมอภินิหาร” (Superman) โดยเขียนต่อจากที่ “หลังฉาก” (ชุมพร แก้วสาร) เขียนค้างไว้ก่อนจะเสียชีวิต จุลศักดิ์ อมรเวช เขียน “จอมอภินิหาร” ขณะที่เรียนเพาะช่างปีที่ 1 เนื่องจากเขารักการวาดรูปมาตั้งแต่เด็ก และรักการวาดการ์ตูนเป็นชีวิตจิตใจ หลังจากเขียน “จอมอภินิหาร” จบลง เขาก็เริ่มคิดเขียนนิยายภาพด้วยสมองของเขาเอง ตอนเขียน “จอมอภินิหาร” มีผู้เขียนบทให้ เขาเขียนเฉพาะภาพในเรื่องเท่านั้น

        ขณะเรียนเพาะช่างปีที่ 2 บทบาทของ จุลศักดิ์ อมรเวช เริ่มสนใจด้านดนตรีและเพลงสากล เนื่องจากเวลานั้นเพลงของ เอลวิส เพรสลีย์ ได้รับความนิยมสูงสุด โดยเฉพาะในหมู่วัยรุ่น จุลศักดิ์ อมรเวช ชอบเพลงของเอลวิสมาก เขาร้องเลียนเสียงเอลวิสได้ใกล้เคียงมาก นักเรียนเพาะช่างที่ร้องเพลงเอลวิส เพรสลีย์ ได้ดีที่สุดคือ โอสถ เกศโสภา เวลามีงานโรงเรียนทีไรเป็นหนีไม่พ้นนักร้องสมัครเล่นสองคนนี้ เพลงเอลวิส เพรสลีย์ ที่จุลศักดิ์ชอบคือเพลง “มิสเทอรีเทรน” เขาเคยเขียนบันทึกไว้ในเรื่องสั้น “นักเขียนการ์ตูนใหญ่” ความตอนหนึ่งว่า “ผมไม่ใช่ลูกเศรษฐี แต่มีสตางค์ ที่เฉลิมไทยนี่ผมไปบ่อยเพราะอยู่ใกล้แหล่งกัน ไปถึงก็ต้องหยอดเพลงโปรด ‘มิสเทอรีเทรน’ ของเอลวิส เพรสลีย์ เป็นเพลงร็อก-อะบิลลี กีตาร์โขลกกระหึ่มเร้าใจ เสียงเอลวิสกังวานแหลมโหยหวน... ความว่ารถไฟมาถึงแล้ว มีรถพ่วงในขบวน 16 คัน รถขบวนยาวสีดำ... มันมาพรากแม่สาวน้อยของข้าไป... เพลงนี้ปัจจุบันผมก็ยังฟังอยู่ นัยว่าเพื่อรำลึกความหลัง”

        จุลศักดิ์ อมรเวช เข้าไปเฉียดเฉี่ยวกับกลุ่มวัยรุ่นโก๋หลังวังบูรพาบ้างเหมือนกัน แต่ก็ไม่ได้ไปร่วมแจมตีกับใครๆ เลิกเรียนที่เพาะช่างแล้วแวะกินดื่มที่ “ร้านหรดี” ซึ่งเป็นร้านของสมาชิก “โก๋หลังวัง” และเขาก็มีชื่ออยู่ในกลุ่มนี้ด้วยคนหนึ่งเหมือนกัน เวลานั้นลูกดำ-แดงมีสายเลือดศิลปินเต็มตัว เรียนวาดรูปไปด้วยเขียนการ์ตูนขายไปด้วย ไม่ว่า ราช เลอสรวง หรือ จุลศักดิ์ อมรเวช หรือ “ระย้า” (จั๊กจั่น) หรือ ปราจิณ เอี่ยมลำเนา (ดร. ปราจิณ เอี่ยมลำเนา) เจ้าพ่อมอเตอร์โชว์ และเจ้าของนิตยสารกรังด์ปรีซ์ หรือแม้แต่ เสวก ว่องกสิกร ก็เขียนการ์ตูนขาย เช่นเดียวกับ ’รงค์ ประภาสะโนบล แห่งชัยพฤกษ์การ์ตูน ส่วนเพื่อนพ้องอีกคน ประสิทธิ์ ชำนาญไพร เล่นดนตรีเรียนหนังสือที่ “นครถ้ำ” วังบูรพา ในช่วงปี 2501 จุลศักดิ์ อมรเวช เริ่มเขียนการ์ตูนที่เป็นสไตล์ของตัวเอง โดยเขียนบทการ์ตูนเองและเขียนภาพประกอบพร้อมเสร็จโดยฝีมือของเขาคนเดียว นิยายภาพ หรือการ์ตูน (คอมิก) เรื่องแรกคือเรื่อง “เจ้าชายผมทอง”

        นิยายภาพเรื่องยอดเยี่ยมของยุคนี้ เจ้าชายผมทอง อิทธิฤทธิ์!! ปาฏิหาริย์!! ตื่นเต้น!! จุก เบี้ยวสกุล : สร้างภาพ

        ตัวหนังสือหน้าแรกขึ้นต้นอย่างนี้ ส่วนภาพประกอบเป็นเจ้าชายถือดาบอยู่ในมือ ผมสีทอง ทะยานเข้าต่อสู้กับยักษ์ร้าย ซึ่งยืนผงาดอยู่กลางหมู่เมฆ ผู้ที่เขียนปก “เจ้าชายผมทอง” คือ สุรินทร์ ปิยานันท์ นักเขียนปกชั้นครูในวงการช่างเขียนมือหนึ่งในยุคนั้น การนำเสนอนิยายภาพ “เจ้าชายผมทอง” ในช่วงที่เรียนเพาะช่าง เมื่อปรากฏว่าการ์ตูนที่เขาเขียนขายดี ทางสำนักพิมพ์ก็ต้องจี้ตามต้นฉบับเพื่อให้ได้ต้นฉบับพิมพ์วางตลาดทุก 15 วัน การ์ตูน 30 หน้า ราคาปก 2.50 บาท ยอดพิมพ์มากพอดู เพราะยุคนั้นไม่มีคู่แข่งมากอ่างทุกวันนี้ ผลจากการที่นิยายภาพหรือการ์ตูนชุด “เจ้าชายผมทอง” ขายดีนี้เอง ทำให้จุลศักดิ์ อมรเวช ตัดสินใจหยุดเรียนที่เพาะช่าง เขียนการ์ตูนเพียงอย่างเดียว

        การ์ตูนสำหรับสังคมไทยในสมัยนั้น ผู้ที่เขียนเรื่องเองและเขียนภาพเองมีเพียงไม่กี่คน เช่น อดิเรก, มนต์, ปรีชา กิ่มมณี, ปรีชา ชวนเสถียร, ตุ๊กตา (พิมล กาฬสีห์) เป็นต้น ส่วนใหญ่การ์ตูนหรือนิยายภาพมักจะนำเอาเรื่องนิทานของ ปานทอง, เสรี เปรมฤทัย มาทำบทแล้วเขียนภาพประกอบ อย่างเรื่อง “เจ้าชายกาลี” ที่เขียนภาพโดย ฉลอง ธาราพรรค์ นั้นก็เป็นเรื่องของคนอื่น เรื่อง “ตะเพียนทอง” ที่คนติดกันงอมแงม และเขียนภาพโดย นิวัตน์ ธาราพรรค์ (ราช เลอสรวง) นั้นก็เขียนบทการ์ตูนจากนิทานของ เสรี เปรมฤทัย หรือแม้แต่เรื่อง “ล่าหัวใจยักษ์” เขียนภาพโดย สัมพันธ์ ก้องสมุทร (ระย้า, จั๊กจั่น) ก็เขียนบทการ์ตูนจากเรื่องของ เสรี เปรมฤทัย ส่วน “ราชันย์” เริ่มเขียนภาพประกอบการ์ตูนจากนิทานเรื่อง “โอรสกับธิดา” ของเสรี เปรมฤทัย เช่นเดียวกัน

        เมื่อ จุลศักดิ์ อมรเวช (จุก เบี้ยวสกุล) สร้างตัวละครการ์ตูน “เจ้าชายผมทอง” ขึ้นมาในวงการหนังสือการ์ตูนนั้น ผู้คนในสังคมโดยเฉพาะเยาวชนกำลังให้ความนิยมในตัวดารา นักร้อง และดาราภาพยนตร์ เอลวิส เพรสลีย์ สูงมาก “เจ้าชายผมทอง” พระเอกที่ จุก เบี้ยวสกุล สร้างขึ้นเวลานั้น โดนใจคนอ่านทันที และได้รับการต้อนรับจากผู้อ่านอย่างอบอุ่น จิตวิทยาพื้นฐานของเยาวชนมักบูชาวีรบุรุษหรือคนเก่ง เมื่อ “เจ้าชายผมทอง” มีใบหน้าเหมือน เอลวิส เพรสลีย์ แรงจูงใจก็สูงอย่างเห็นได้ชัด “เจ้าชายผมทอง” จึงครองใจคนอ่านทั้งเด็กและผู้ใหญ่

        “เจ้าชายผมทอง” กลายเป็นนิยายภาพติดตลาดขายดิบขายดี มีเด็กๆมารอซื้อเงินสดที่หน้าร้านผ่านฟ้าพิทยา แม้แต่ร้านค้าต่างจังหวะดก็จะมาซื้อการ์ตูนย่านถนนนครสวรรค์ไปขาย กิจการพิมพ์การ์ตูนขายจึงมีรายได้ดีทุกรอบ 15 วัน ในปี พ.ศ. 2503 จุก เบี้ยวสกุล เขียนการ์ตูนในสังกัดสำนักพิมพ์ผ่านฟ้าเต็มตัว ต่อมา จุก เบี้ยวสกุล ก็เขียนนิยายภาพเรื่อง “มังกรสามหัว” เวลานั้นอิทธิพลการ์ตูนจีนเข้ามาครองตลาดย่านเท็กซัส เยาวราช ร้านเช่าหนังสือจีนได้รับความนิยมในหมู่คนจีน การ์ตูนไทยก็เริ่มคิดสร้างรูปเล่มแบบใหม่ขึ้นมาบ้าง รูปเล่มการ์ตูนจีนขนาดกว้างแนวนอน 5 x 3.1/2 นิ้ว เป็นการ์ตูนขนาดจิ๋ว มีความหนา 24 หน้า ราคาต้นทุนการผลิตถูกกว่าขนาด 8 หน้ายก
